From Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to Incy Wincy Spider, nursery rhymes are more than just catchy tunes – they’re powerful tools for learning. That’s why we’re delighted to celebrate World Nursery Rhyme Week (10–14 November) across our nurseries this term.
At The Willows, we know that rhymes spark more than giggles – they lay the foundations for language, listening and self-expression. This World Nursery Rhyme Week, our preschoolers have been exploring familiar songs in new ways, with lots of singing, movement and imaginative play woven throughout.
Why Nursery Rhymes Matter
Nursery rhymes play a huge role in early development. When children sing, repeat and act out rhymes, they’re building key skills without even realising it. Here’s how rhymes support learning:
- Language & Communication – Repetition helps children learn new words, sentence patterns and rhythm in speech.
- Memory & Listening – Rhymes strengthen short-term memory and teach children to listen carefully.
- Early Literacy – Rhyme awareness is one of the building blocks of learning to read and write.
- Confidence & Social Skills – Singing together builds confidence, turn-taking and a sense of belonging.
- Movement & Coordination – Many rhymes involve actions that support gross and fine motor skills.
Rhymes at Nursery – and at Home
Throughout the week, our nursery teams will be sharing some of our favourite rhymes with the children – through singing sessions, themed activities and story-based play.
We’re also inviting families to join in at home! Here are a few simple rhymes you can enjoy together:
- 🐑 Baa Baa Black Sheep
- 🦆 Five Little Ducks
- 🕷️ Incy Wincy Spider
- 🚢 The Big Ship Sails
- 🐸 Little Green Frog
Singing together at home is a wonderful way to strengthen bonds, build routine and support your child’s speech development.
Singing Builds More Than Words
Whether we’re clapping along in a group or quietly sharing a favourite rhyme one-to-one, these songs create meaningful learning moments – and lasting memories too.
We’ll be celebrating rhymes all week long – so keep an eye on our social media for simple songs and ideas to enjoy at home.
