Our History

The Willows Preschool

Opened in 2025, The Willows Preschool is the dedicated next step for children aged 3–5 moving on from Poplars Blossoms Nursery School. Rooted in the Poplars Approach, our preschool offers a nurturing space for child-led learning, outdoor exploration, and school readiness – continuing the journey that begins at Poplars Blossoms.

Forest School

Our Forest School sessions offer children playful, hands-on natural experiences, supporting their confidence, independence, and curiosity. Set in our natural outdoor environment, children explore freely, take supported risks, and engage in sensory, nature-based play.

Whether building dens, investigating minibeasts or creating art with natural materials, every activity encourages critical thinking, creativity and a deeper connection to the world around them.

Through Forest School, children become curious explorers, environmentally aware, and confident learners—ready for their next stage.

Preschool

In our preschool room, we support children in building the confidence, independence and curiosity they need to thrive in school and beyond. Learning experiences are shaped around the children’s interests and the natural world, allowing them to make meaningful connections through play. Whether exploring the seasons outdoors, investigating cause and effect, or expressing themselves through art, every child is encouraged to think critically and communicate confidently. Areas of learning including literacy, mathematics, science, and creative arts are embedded naturally into our environment.

Curriculum

We offer a flexible and holistic curriculum:

  • A balance of adult-led and child-initiated learning
  • Playful and practical experiences connected to real life
  • High expectations within an inclusive and nurturing setting

Supportive of each child’s natural pace of development

Nutritious and Healthy Food

Mealtimes at The Willows are social and supportive, encouraging children to develop independence, learn new skills and try a variety of healthy foods. Children are involved in serving themselves and are gently encouraged to explore different tastes and textures. We provide a balanced diet in line with guidance from the Food Standards Agency.

A Word About Play

Play at The Willows is purposeful, inclusive and meaningful.

✅ Children decide their level of adult support
✅ Opportunities are inclusive and open-ended
✅ A mix of solitary and social play, structured and free

We believe play is the pathway to deep and lasting learning.

SEND Provision

We welcome and support all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Every child at The Willows is valued as an individual. Where additional support is needed, we work in partnership with parents and professionals to create tailored learning journeys.

Our inclusive practice ensures all children can access our curriculum, environment and activities with confidence and joy.

What Parents Are Saying About Us

I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has looked after my little boy since he began at Poplars. It was quite a traumatic time trying to find somewhere for him when his childminder could no longer look after him. It was a blessing in disguise as I knew the minute I walked in and met you all that Poplars was the perfect place. I cannot thank you enough for making that transition so easy and he has had the best time ever. He has come on so much since he has started and that’s all thanks to all you. We are going to miss you all so much and I wish I could just move you all up north with us.

Parent of Jack

My children have been part of Poplars Nursery School since 2012 and they have benefited enormously from the ethos of the nursery, the smaller, home-like setting, and the care and attention of the staff. The staff know the children very well, and appreciate their personalities and where they are at in their development. They track their development in conjunction with parents with books which include plenty of photos so you can see what they have been up to. They do lots of fun activities, which are well thought through and promote their self-confidence and independence, In fact, a lot of thought goes in to their processes and activities and it’s clear that the children enjoy being in this environment. My children have particularly enjoyed the visits from White Post farm, the annual nursery outings, the occasional outings to local sites and annual productions where they get to perform to all the parents and show them what they have been doing throughout the year. We have been delighted by the care and nurture this nursery has given all our children – thank you Poplars!

Parents of Sophie, Alice and Martha

I cannot explain how grateful I am with the care and love you have shown my little boy. We are so sad to be leaving but so proud that he has had such a fantastic start to his life and that is down to all you staff. Thank you.

Parent of Sienna, Theo and Kamali

To all the staff at Poplars Blossoms. I cannot thank you all enough for helping to bring up my young lady. You have taught her many things from learning to read; about the world we all live in; to be mindful of others and to enjoy the world of learning. Thank you!
